When Jess was completing her graduate program in graphic design at Parsons School of Design in New York City, one of her projects required her to experiment with sewing. The class had the option of designing a pillow, a washcloth, a plush toy, etc. depending on the students’ capabilities. The only requirement was that they designed and printed their own fabric.
Jess had no sewing experience and so she decided to go with a simple shape, a cube. After she was done, she sewed a little smiley face on her handmade plush shape and Cubert, our first character, was born!
In another graphic design class, Jess was tasked with creating a brand concept. She had thought that Cubert might make for an excellent educational toy and set to work conceptualizing the other characters and the Prismland brand.
After showing the project to her long-time friend, Matt Mayers, the two decided to try and start a real business out of the brand. They established that the best way to fund the concept would be through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. They were successfully funded in October of 2014 and launched their online store in February 2016.
